Growing small businesses often face many barriers to growth. From navigating complex financial systems to securing loans, hiring employees, and marketing their services, the challenges can be overwhelming. That’s why the Yakima County Development Association’s (YCDA) Bilingual Business Accelerator is designed to meet business owners where they are, providing hands-on guidance to help them succeed. The program is offered in both English and Spanish, ensuring that all business owners—regardless of their preferred language—can access the tools and resources they need to grow.
The Business Accelerator supports businesses in the second phase of their development. These are businesses that are at least two years old, have fewer than 30 employees, and have active growth plans but need additional assistance to accomplish that growth. The program will impact dozens of business owners by providing at least five hours of professional business development training in key areas that include: Financial/Digital Education, HR Management, Real Estate, Marketing and Promotion, and Financing.
Funded through a mix of public and private investment—including support from YCDA’s investors, the Wells Fargo Foundation, South Central Workforce, the Washington Economic Development Finance Authority (WEDFA), and the Washington Microenterprise Association (WASMA)—this program provides Yakima’s small business owners access to the expertise and resources they need to grow their businesses successfully.
The reality is that many small businesses struggle to survive beyond their early years. Nationally, about 20% of small businesses close within their first year, and nearly 50% close within five years. Even established businesses face challenges as they try to expand, whether due to financial hurdles, workforce constraints, or market shifts. The Bilingual Business Accelerator is designed to address these challenges head-on, providing targeted support to help businesses not only stay open but grow stronger, increasing their longevity and impact within the community.
Programs like this don’t just benefit business owners—they benefit all of us. When small businesses succeed, they generate jobs, provide valuable services, and contribute to the overall economic health of our region. A stronger business community means a stronger Yakima County.
