Yakima Air Terminal: A Modernized Hub for Economic Growth

Yakima Air Terminal-McAllister Field is on the rise, both in passenger numbers and in plans for modernization. With doubled passenger counts over the past year, the airport’s growth mirrors the increasing importance of Yakima as a regional transportation hub. Early morning departures and late-night arrivals, reintroduced in collaboration with Alaska Airlines, have proven immensely popular. These flights, which previously operated before being canceled during the COVID shutdowns and other factors, are now back thanks to a coordinated local effort to revive them.

The return of these critical flights was made possible by a $500,000 Minimum Revenue Guarantee Fund, created to offset the costs of re-establishing the route. This fund was supported by contributions from 20 local businesses and government entities, showcasing the community’s commitment to enhancing regional connectivity. The route’s high load factors—averaging over 74%—underscore its success, making it one of Alaska Airlines’ top-performing new routes.

This increase in demand highlights the airport’s role in supporting the Yakima Valley economy. Enhanced connectivity has allowed local businesses to access key markets more efficiently and made the region more attractive to new businesses considering relocation. As passenger numbers soar, so does the need for a terminal that matches this growth and provides an improved experience for travelers. Recognizing this, the Yakima Air Terminal is undergoing a long-overdue transformation.

Built in 1950 and last remodeled over 25 years ago, the terminal’s aging infrastructure no longer meets modern demands. However, a comprehensive modernization plan is in motion, fueled by a combination of federal funding and local initiatives. The airport has already secured $13.5 million in Congressionally Directed Spending, along with FAA grants, Supporting Investments in Economic Development funding, and local dollars to jumpstart the process.

The first phase of modernization includes essential projects like replacing the terminal roof, upgrading HVAC systems, and improving baggage handling with a new carousel system. These upgrades will enhance passenger comfort and operational efficiency while setting the stage for future expansions. Additional projects include a solar canopy installation in the parking lot, which will generate 270,000 kWh annually and significantly reduce the airport’s carbon footprint.

The modernization effort is also a testament to the importance of the airport as a driver of local economic development. Local businesses across industries rely on the airport to support their operations, including Yakima Valley’s headquartered companies with employees who frequently travel nationally and internationally to manage business relationships and explore new opportunities. As a major agricultural hub, the region also attracts visitors from around the globe during the hop harvest and the harvest of other crops, underscoring the critical role the airport plays in facilitating business and trade. Modernizing the terminal ensures the airport can continue to meet the needs of these vital sectors while strengthening its role as a gateway to the region.

Looking ahead, the airport’s plans align with its broader vision to establish Yakima as a regional transportation hub. The addition of popular destinations, ongoing advocacy for new routes, and investments in sustainability are creating a facility that reflects the region’s growing prominence. With these continued improvements, the airport is positioning itself to serve the community’s needs for decades to come while enhancing the region’s ability to attract businesses, residents, and visitors.
