For two decades, Yakima County faced a tough reality: more people were leaving the area than moving in. Yakima County is now experiencing positive net migration, with more people moving in than leaving—a pivotal shift that signals newfound opportunity for the region. Since 2020 alone, the county’s population has grown by 8,430, with 3,400 of those new residents coming directly from families and individuals choosing to make Yakima their home.

When individuals and families move here, they bring spending power that supports local businesses, create demand for housing that spurs construction, and add skills that diversify our workforce. From remote workers and small business entrepreneurs to skilled professionals filling roles in key industries, newcomers are helping build a stronger, more resilient future for our region.

Compared to metro areas like Seattle and Portland, Yakima offers a lower cost of living—a key factor for families and remote workers seeking a better balance of expenses and quality of life. Beyond affordability, Yakima’s outdoor recreation opportunities, sense of community, and agricultural heritage make it an attractive option for those looking for fresh opportunities.
